Fix your energy tariff now

by Moneysupermarket.com

Npower and Scottish Power have both pulled their fixed energy deals this morning so consumers wanting to protect themselves from further gas and electricity price rises need to act now as the remaining fixed and capped products aren’t likely to be around for much longer.

EDF Energy hiked gas and electricity prices by 22% and 17% respectively last Friday and other providers are expected to follow suit in the coming weeks. With households already having seen their energy bills rise by an average of 14% this year, the prospect of more increases imminently is resulting in huge demand for fixed and capped rate products. But unless you move quickly and apply for one of these deals today, you risk losing out.

It is likely that Npower and Scottish Power will launch new fixed rate tariffs but these will be more expensive that the products withdrawn from the market today.

British Gas’ Price Guarantee is currently the cheapest fixed rate deal for most people – the average household would pay £1,071.64 a year on this deal. Alternatively, Eon, and EDF are also still offering fixed tariffs, the average annual bills of which work out at £1,102.39 and £1,229.42 respectively.

Average costs are only a guideline as the price you pay for gas and electricity depends on your usage and also where in the country you live.  Our Gas and Electric Comparison Tool  will help you find the most competitive deal for your circumstances.

CUT YOUR ENERGY BILLS AND HELP THE ENVIRONMENT

“With energy bills at record highs and further increases looking increasingly likely, it’s more important than ever to ensure you’re not paying more than you need for gas and electricity. And did you know that switching provider could not only save you money, but help the environment too?”

Consumers have already been warned that gas and electricity costs could rise by another 40% before the end of the year. Energy bills have already risen by an average of 15% this year and further increases will be terrible news for millions of consumers already finding it hard to make ends meet.

Around 60% of households are still on their provider’s standard tariff and with life becoming increasingly tough because of rising living costs, it has never been more important to ensure you are not paying more than you need for any of your utilities or other home services. And despite energy prices being at record levels, anyone on a standard tariff who still pays quarterly could save money by switching to a cheaper alternative.

Online tariffs offer the best value – the average household could save £265 a year by switching from Scottish Power’s standard dual fuel tariff to British Gas’ Click Energy 5 product. However, if you fancy changing supplier and helping the environment at the same time, the green tariffs offered by five of the six major energy firms are also cheaper than their standard deals (see below).
