David Stuttard

David Stuttard was an artist, poet and musician who lived in Newton Abbot, South Devon, for thirty years. Divorced and living alone, he lived in Spencer Road, a terraced red brick street overlooking the town, painting nearly every day in his basement.

He chose to remain unknown, deliberately not exhibiting or selling his work, accumulating the finished pieces in a spare bedroom. The pictures themselves, about 350 oil canvasses of varying sizes, plus several poems, focus heavily on Newton Abbot street scenes and the surrounding Teignbridge area, with a style that has been described variously as naive, quirky, melancholic, humorous, 'outsider' and unique.
