Stone Tools Exhibition At Kents Cavern (All Day)

RAMM exhibition at Kents Cavern: Cutting Edge

Until 31 January 2011, open 9am to 5pm, free

Cavern House, Kents Cavern, 89/91 Ilsham Road, Torquay, Devon TQ1 2JF

Stones transformed into a thousand tools.

With a wide range of objects from RAMM’s collections this exhibition shows the variety of raw materials used to produce handaxes, spear heads and scrapers. It reveals sources of suitable stone in south west England and takes a look at some of the main sources from around the world.

This is a rare opportunity to explore the geology and material science of stone tools rather than their often discussed historical or cultural importance. Find out whether people used local rocks or traded stone over long distances. See how the physical properties of the stone influence the final shape, type and quality of the tool. Discover the latest dating methods and how scientists can determine the source of the stone. Examine and handle stone tools and learn how to identify them.

Kents Cavern is a prehistoric cave and award winning visitor attraction. The site was used by Britain’s earliest ancient humans thousands of years ago and today the cave is the only underground visitor centre in the UNESCO Global Geopark, a protected national monument and an internationally renowned prehistoric show cave.

Entry to the exhibition is free. There is an admission charge for entering the cave.

Tiverton Comedy Hall (8:00PM - 8:00PM)

Tiverton Comedy Hall

It's a cracking Line-up at Tiverton's Comedy Hall on Monday 6th September.

Opener is Matt Kirshen, best known for his run on NBC's Last Comic Standing. Headline is highly respected Geordie comic John Fothergill. And MC for the night is Canadian Craig Campbell, currently touring the UK with Frankie Boyle. Tickets from www.comedyhall.co.uk. Show 8pm.

Young Matt Kirshen has made a name for himself stateside with a great run on Last Comic Standing on NBC. His precision wit has already earned him an impressive reputation on the UK comedy circuit. His engagingly impish style is shot through with an intelligent and skillful talent that belies his youthful appearance, making him a firm favourite with audiences and fellow comedians alike. With an impressive array of awards and press accolades under his belt, catch him now and say you saw him first live at Comedy Hall.

"A rollercoaster of comedy genius" The Scotsman. "His performance is the perfect mix of innocence and post-adolescent cynicism driven by infectious energy." Metro Life Magazine "Excellent" The Stage "Killer gags" Metro

Then sit down and watch a master at work. John Fothergill was born in Yorkshire in 1712, to a family of devout Quakers. No, wait, that was the English physicist. Comedian John Fothergill became a regular at Newcastle’s Comedy Café and in 1993, his first year as a comedian, he had been lucky enough to appear with the likes of Jack Dee, Lee Evans and Jo Brand but in ’94 it had become obvious that if he wanted to go any further in showbiz he would have to do a Dick Whittington, pack up his spotted hanky and head off to the land of Eastenders and poor quality football.

John has slotted into the comedy circuit like a three pinned plug combining a unique style of embarrassing sexual revelations with a rural innocence. He has also toured the nations universities, done two tours of Ireland and performed in Hong Kong and regularly at the Edinburgh Festival. As well as a month long run at the Adelaide International Comedy Festival, he has appeared on BBC 1’s The Stand Up Show, and became a regular member of the Comedy Store’s highly regarded Cutting Edge team.

“Hilarious stories delivered superbly” THE GUARDIAN "Definitely a comedian to watch" Sunday Telegraph

Plus CRAIG CAMPBELL is back - with the raffle and so much more, having just completed the filming of Michael McIntyre's Comedy Roadshow in Glasgow.

Don't forget that the line-up is subject to change for every event with no refunds. I have to say it. It's the law.

31 July to 25 September 2010

Sashiko is a form of stitching that the Japanese used to make their work clothes until the mid 20th century. In total, more than 75 garments and related objects, including videos and significant works from Japanese photographer, IWAYIMA Takeji (1920-1989) are included in the exhibition. Most of the exhibits are being shown in the UK for the first time.
