Can I use the website without Javascript? Print E-mail
Sunday, 16 September 2007
Digg!
It is important to me (as well as being the law) to make this website accessible to everyone, and I know I still have some way to go with it.  One problem is that Javascript is used extensively in many of the basic components that were used to make this website. I have been working to make the site more accessible to users who cannot use Javascript. This is my progress so far in ensuring that they can still use the website.

What works?

1) Logging in and out works without Javascript

2) Main Menu options are all there and working.

3) The registration form works without Javascript. (I am also working on an alternative to the CAPTCHA security code).

4) I've created an alternative form for adding new directory entries as the standard form depended heavily on Javascript. Unfortunately, editing entries after they have been published is not yet possible without Javascript.

5) The form for uploading featured images works without Javascript.

6) The form for uploading book listings works without Javascript.

7) The form for uploading coupons works without Javascript.

8) The form for uploading E-Cards works without Javascript.

9) The events calendar works without Javascript.

10) News feeds work

11) Books section works but ratings and reviews don't work

12) Search works

13) Browsing the directory works

14) user profiles work

15) E-cards can now be sent and received without Javascript

16) Contact form - the 'Send' button on the email form won't work without Javascript, but I've added a message, an email link, and enough alternative contact information.

17) The original form for Adding News, with word processing features etc,  does not work without Javascript. An accessible form for entering plain text and uploading images has been created instead, with the advanced options available as an alternative.

What's left?

1) Interactive Maps do not appear without Javascript. I will add an alternative static image of the map. So it will not be interactive, but it will show the right place.

2) Downloads - the Download button in the Downloads section does not work without Javascript, but flag images may be downloaded from the flags page by right-clicking or by saving the page as a complete web page.

3) Polls - vote and results buttons don't work

4) Map coordinates - I will provide a link to alternative content.

5) Ratings and reviews in the books section don't work without Javascript
