Advice for motorists driving through snow in Devon Print E-mail
Friday, 03 December 2010

Devon County Council’s gritters have been working continuously throughout the night to keep the county’s main roads clear, as snow moved in from the east of the county at around 11pm last night and spread across most of the county.

Chris Cranston, Devon County Council’s Highway Operations Manager, said: "We’re not expecting to see a thaw today and as we’re in for another deep frost tonight there could well be widespread icy conditions, particularly off the treated network."

Motorists are reminded of the following advice:

  1. Avoid unnecessary journeys. If you have to travel, drive according to the conditions;
  2. Never assume a road has been salted. Remember that in extreme cold even salting will not stop ice from forming;
  3. Allow additional time for your journey and reduce your speed;
  4. If you have vulnerable or elderly neighbours, think about how they could possibly be helped through the cold spell;
  5. Listen to local radio for updates on current weather conditions.
