Plymouth City Council News Release, 12 March 2008

A man from Dawlish who put his imagination into top gear to encourage more Devon drivers to car share has won a caption competition run by Plymouth City Council, in partnership with Devon County and Torbay Councils.

Gordon Smith's slogan - ‘Share cars, not queues!’ - was selected from almost 900 entries, including two from as far afield as China and Australia.

The aim was to find a snappy phrase to raise the profile of the free Carsharedevon.com website, which matches people who are travelling in the same direction and want to share journeys to cut the cost of motoring.

The winning slogan will now be printed on car windscreen stickers in time for Carsharedevon.com’s fifth birthday on Tuesday 25 March.

Gordon was delighted to hear that he had won and said his inspiration came from seeing ‘Car sharing – a decongestant for roads’ on one of the temporary roadside boards.  He has chosen to receive vouchers worth £100 as his prize.

The shortlisted entries were judged by Councillor Kevin Wigens, Plymouth City Council’s Cabinet Member for Transport, Councillor Margaret Rogers, Devon County Council Executive Member for Environment, and Councillor Chris Lewis, Torbay’s Cabinet Member for Transport and Planning.

Councillor Wigens said: It is really encouraging that over 5,000 people have already registered at Carsharedevon.com. I hope that seeing these stickers in car windows will encourage more people to join the scheme to reduce their carbon footprint, save money and help to tackle congestion on our roads. I would also like to congratulate the winner of the sticker competition and all of those who entered."
