Saturday, 11 December 2010

Devon's Music Service, which promotes musical instrument and singing lessons in Devon schools, was recently presented with three awards at the National Music Council's annual awards ceremony in London. Devon Music Service arranges special mini tours of schools and communities by international performing artists, organises musical ensembles, orchestras and bands, and provides musical instruments for whole class teaching and individual hire.

Representatives from Devon County Council attended and a quartet from Devon Youth Jazz Orchestra played as part of the ceremony.

Devon was awarded a Major Trophy and a Diploma of Special Merit in recognition of its commitment to jazz education in Devon. Devon County Council also received a Creative Music Diploma to recognise its commitment to creative music making and composition.

Councillors praised the Devon Youth Jazz Orchestra's performance and thanked everyone involved for their contributions to music in Devon. Ken Parr, head of the Devon Music Service said,

"The DYJO players gave a superb performance and created quite a stir amongst the delegates who were impressed by their abilities, age and the fact that county ensembles only get to rehearse once a month on average. I'd like to say a big thank you to everyone involved in the service for their contributions to Devon once again receiving these national accolades."

Councillor Christine Channon said:

"It is absolutely fantastic news that Devon has once again received top awards for its music services, and my warmest congratulations to all."
