Visitors will be able to enjoy free entry to a number of Plymouth’s most historic sites on Saturday 12 September as the city celebrates this year's national Heritage Open Days event. The Elizabethan House, the Merchant’s House and Smeaton’s Tower lighthouse on the Hoe will all be participating in the scheme and welcoming people throughout the day.
The houses, which offer visitors a great insight into the heritage of Plymouth, will be open from 10am to 5pm with last entries at 4.30pm. Smeaton’s Tower will be open from 10am to 12 noon and from 1 to 4pm with last entries at 11.30am and 3.30pm. There is no need to book in advance at any of the sites. "It’s a special year for Smeaton’s Tower as 2009 marks the 250th anniversary of its construction out on the Eddystone reef,” said Nigel Overton, Maritime Heritage Officer for Plymouth City Council. "Heritage Open Days offer the ideal time to visit this famous structure and appreciate what a major civil engineering and building design achievement it is.” Meanwhile, Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery – which offers free admission all year round – will be hosting a free, storytelling session between 2 and 3pm. ‘Super Structures Storytelling’ will be led by professional storyteller David Heathfield. His tales of towers, bridges and castles will link to the Museum’s current Super Structures exhibition which celebrates Smeaton’s Tower 250 as well as the 150th anniversary of the Royal Albert Bridge. There is no need to book. For more information call 01752 304774. 2 September 2009, Plymouth City Council |
