Mount Edgcumbe is hosting some unusual and intriguing events and workshops over the summer, thanks to funding from the Devonport Regeneration Community Partnership.

Many of them have been designed to link with the exhibition The Adventures of Madalene and Louisa, which showcases the work of two teenage sisters who lived in Devonport nearly 150 years ago.

They loved studying insects together and produced one of the Victorian era’s most inventive, accurate and humorous natural history albums. Its striking images include fantastic adventures where the sisters are tiny and the insects appear huge. The album is on display at Mount Edgcumbe House for the first time since its creation. The fabulous pictures and ideas from this exhibition are the inspiration for many of the workshops.

On Sunday 28 June there is a rare chance to see some enchanting pre-cinema Victorian entertainment - a magic lantern show. This will be a half hour show of ‘visual delights including the amazing, colourful and eerily beautiful, chromatrope living butterfly’.

The workshops have something to interest all ages such as a copper metal working family workshop where families can design and produce a copper plaque (Sunday 23 August). There is also an animation workshop where insects come to life using 3D stop motion animation (Tuesday 25 August).

There are all-day creative writing and painting workshops for adults as well as special workshops for under five year olds. There is also the chance to find out what a zoetrope is and create the illusion of motion at the ‘Spin it’ workshop on Wednesday 19 August.

Most of the workshops are included in the price of entry to the house, which is £6 for adults or £3.50 for children. Group bookings are welcome. To see what is on next, to book a place, or find out what other events, activities or exhibitions are on visit our Mount Edgcumbe web pages or call 01752 822236.

Spaces may be available on the day but many get booked up, so book as early as possible.
