Students with hearing impairments from all over Devon will have the opportunity to experience music and play instruments next week (Wed 3 February) - thanks to Devon County Council's Music Service.
The team from the Music Service will be visiting Countess Wear Primary School, where students will have the chance to try a selection of instruments including djembe, guitars, cello, ukulele, double bass, viola, and violin. The morning session, which is the next step in a series, will start with group working with djembes, focusing on rhythm and note length, then they will work in three groups on rhythm instruments, lower strings and higher strings. In the afternoon the group will play as an orchestra, experimenting with textures and rhythms, with the aid of a graphic score and photographs projected on a screen. The aim of the project to make sure that all hearing impaired students have the opportunity of learning to play an instrument, and eventually the Music Service hopes to form an orchestra for all deaf students in Devon. Devon County Council's Cabinet Member for Children and Young People's Health and Wellbeing, Cllr Andrea Davis, said: "Music is such a wonderful way for children of all ages and abilities to explore their senses and develop new skills, as well as providing a great social environment. "Our Music Service is committed to opening up these opportunities for all young people and this initiative is a really creative mix of music and other sensory stimuli to enable deaf and hearing impaired children to enjoy making music."
