Plymouth people can celebrate the annual National Storytelling Week at their City Museum and Art Gallery on Saturday 30 January with a special event based on the tales of one of the world's most well-known storytellers.

'Tales from Hans Christian Andersen' will take place at 1.30pm and 2.30pm. Professional storyteller, David Heathfield will lead two 45-minute long sessions featuring interactive retellings of two of Andersen's newest tales, ‘The Red Shoes’ – a story originally published in 1845 where a vain girl is made to wear a pair of magical red shoes – and ‘The Nightingale’ – a fairy tale about a poorly Chinese emperor whose health is restored by the beautiful singing of a nightingale.

The sessions are most suited to children aged seven and up although younger children are also welcome. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

"We've run lots of storytelling events with David in the past and they're always highly enjoyable," says Visitor Services Manager, Mark Tosdevin. "Hans Christian Andersen has written some of the world's most famous tales. He seemed like the perfect choice for our event which forms part of the UK's annual celebration of storytelling.”

Admission to 'Tales from Hans Christian Andersen' is free and there is no need to book in advance. People are asked to arrive in good time for the start of each session in order to avoid disappointment.

Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery marks a number of national events each year including Museums at Night, The Big Draw, National Science and Engineering Week and Heritage Open Days.
