Casper, the Plymouth cat who shot to fame for his habit of travelling on local buses, is to star in a children's book.

The travelling cat was often known to board the number 3 bus at the stop near his home in Poole Park Road, Barne Barton, for an 11-mile round trip to the city centre and back.

Sadly, Casper was run over by a car earlier in 2009, to the dismay of hundreds of fans who have joined a Facebook group in his honour.

But Casper is to live on in a children's book, to be published by Simon and Schuster. Nigel Stoneman, of Simon and Schuster, said, "We already have an author in mind and we will try to put this together as quickly as possible. The story is so fantastic and it will be beautifully told, bringing in all the people who were critical along Casper's path."

A spokeswoman for First Buses said: "We are delighted that he is being remembered in this way and are sure that it will give Casper's owners some comfort to know that his memory lives on."

Casper's owner, Sue finden, said "It's just sad that I had to lose him for it to really take off... But it's lovely to think he will go on in memories, and with this book his story will live on forever."

All profits from the sale of the book will be donated to animal charities.
