People in Exeter are being asked to play their part in tackling climate change.
The City Council is asking local residents, businesses and organisations to come up with ideas on how to spend Exeter's Climate Change Parking Levy. Everyone who submits an idea will be entered into a prize draw to win £50 worth of energy saving products for the home.
In a drive to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, the City Council recently introduced a climate change levy on Council-run car parks. The levy, which forms part of Exeter's Climate Change Strategy, will generate approximately £110,000 this year (2% of expected revenue).
Part of the revenue - £10,000 - will be used to extend the Green Shoppers campaign in partnership with the Express and Echo and EDF Energy. The remainder of the fund (approx £100,000) will be used to fund additional climate change measures within the city, including projects to reduce carbon emissions in homes and businesses and sustainable transport measures, for example, cycling and walking.
Residents, businesses and organisations in the city are being challenged to come up with ideas for how the money should be spent. The projects should fall into the following categories:
· Reducing energy consumption in homes in Exeter
· Reducing energy use in businesses in Exeter
· Sustainable transport e.g. cycling, walking and reducing car use in Exeter.

Cllr Connel Boyle, Lead Councillor for Environment and Leisure, said: "Climate change is one of the biggest issues affecting not just Exeter but the whole of the country and the world. The vast majority of people feel passionately about climate change and this is a great opportunity for people in the city to influence the future.
"We want the people of Exeter to have ownership of this project and I think the fact that all of the money raised by the parking levy will be used to tackle climate change in an open and transparent way, can only help schemes like this to spread all of over the country."
An evaluation team (independent of the Council) will short-list the ideas received for the public to choose a winner in May/June. Projects will be judged on how cost-effective they are in terms of reducing carbon dioxide emissions as well as their practicality to implement.
