  • Improving sanitation in West Java: GHD
Many areas of Indonesia lack adequate sanitation and this is particularly the case in rural areas. Efforts to address this situation have been increasing over the last few years, and a change in policy direction by the government of Indonesia has influenced the approach to the problem. An emphasis on decentralization of services and a demand-driven response have directed much of the activity to the communities themselves.

  • Energy Service Companies (ESCOs): TEPCO & JFS
Utilities are increasingly looking to energy efficiency services as a profit-center, separate from their main business of supplying energy to customers, leveraging existing relationships and brand identification. The business of energy service companies (ESCO) is to provide energy efficiency services, and they are expected to play an important role in combating global warming while bringing customers benefits. JFS, a TEPCO group company, actively promotes energy efficiency in commercial buildings and guarantees a certain level of cost reduction through energy savings (with a performance contract).

  • The Road to Copenhagen: What Business Needs from Global Policy on Climate Change

  • Enterprise Energy Management System: IBM
IBM's Real Estate and Site Operations group, responsible for energy management programs across the company's operations, executes a robust energy conservation program. To meet the company's goal of achieving annual energy use avoidance and reductions equivalent to 3.5% of the company's energy use in 2007, the group implemented an Enterprise Energy Management System (EEMS) to enable real time energy use monitoring at IBM locations. This system has enabled IBM to identify more than 105 energy conservation projects over 2005 and 2006 that resulted in a total savings of 16,500 MWh of electricity and US$ 1.35 million for the company.

  • Nissan Motor unveils new prototype electric car
Nissan Motor Co. unveiled a new prototype electric vehicle Wednesday with batteries twice as powerful as conventional technology, aiming to take a lead in zero-emission cars.

  • Business in Deep at World Water Week
“Business is part of the solution, and its potential is driven by its engagement”, says Björn Stigson President of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD). The 2008 World Water Week in Stockholm will see many of WBCSD member companies engage with stakeholders and contribute to the discussions – which will have a special focus this year on achieving the Millennium Development Goal Target on sanitation.

  • Adapting to Climate Change - Impacts for Business
Changes in the Earth's climate system are already creating issues for how business operates. While the magnitude and frequency of climate impacts is uncertain, the consequences of some climate change impacts are now unavoidable. The WBCSD's new publication, Adaptation: An Issue Brief for Business, presents an overview of climate adaptation issues from a business perspective.

  • Business in the World of Water: The H2O Scenarios - Now Available in Croatian
The H2O scenarios, now available in Croatian, offer three stories about the role of business in relation to the growing issue of water in the world. These stories do not try to cover everything but attempt to bring to life a limited number of alternative future environments that will challenge our economic viability, social legitimacy, and global fitness in the marketplace.

  • WBCSD Adds Business Voice to UN Development Cooperation Forum
The WBCSD recently participated in the UN's Development Cooperation Forum, which reviewed the effectiveness and coherence of international development cooperation.
